Eric C. Nelson, M.D.

Dr. Eric Nelson - Palmetto Hematology OncologyEric C. Nelson was born in Grinnell, Iowa, on October 22, 1946. He attended the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1964 through 1968. He subsequently graduated from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1972. He completed a three year residency in Internal Medicine at the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas in 1975. Thereafter, he served as a Fellow in Hematology-Oncology completing training in 1977. While in San Antonio, he served as a clinical instructor in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas School of Medicine. He was then transferred to the Keesler USAF Medical Center in Biloxi, Mississippi and to Howard Memorial Hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi. After completion of his Air Force service, he moved to Columbia, South Carolina where he served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine from 1979 until 1981. He moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1980 and together with Dr. James Bearden, with whom he had served in the U.S. Air Force, began Palmetto Hematology Oncology Associates.

Dr. Nelson is a principle investigator in South West Oncology Group and actively participates in clinical research through the Spartanburg Upstate Clinical Community Oncology Program. He is a past President of the Spartanburg chapter of the American Cancer Society and prior Chief of Medicine at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. He is a member of the South Carolina Oncology Society, The American Society of Clinical Oncology and the South Carolina Medical Association. Dr. Nelson is on the staff of Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Mary Black Memorial Hospital, Wallace Thomson Hospital, SRMC Hospital for Restorative Care and Upstate Carolina Medical Center. Dr. Nelson is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.

Dr. Nelson’s wife, Lynn, has completed a master’s degree in nursing and works part-time at Palmetto Hematology Oncology as an infusion nurse. They have two children; Katherine and Bryant. He attends Fernwood Baptist Church in Spartanburg. His interests include travel, golf, tennis and skiing. He loves music of all types and plays folk and classical guitar as well as bluegrass banjo.
